Roundabouts in Hilliard
Educational Outreach
Roundabouts are popping up all over Central Ohio because they are proven to be safer, they are more efficient at managing traffic, and they are "greener" than traditional intersections. These "green" intersections trade pavement for plants, and they also result in less vehicle emissions caused by idling cars.
The success of roundabouts is dependant on motorists understanding the rules of the road. For this reason, the City of Hilliard has teamed with the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), the cities of Dublin and Gahanna, and the counties of Franklin and Delaware to produce an educational video to help drivers understand how to drive a roundabout. The 8-minute full length video and an abbreviated 2-minute version can be viewed online at: http://www.morpc.org/transportation/Rules_Of_The_Road/Howto.asp
A DVD version of this video is available at the Hilliard Senior Center and at the Joint Safety Services Building. Local officials are currently working with the Ohio Department of Public Safety to get this educational information into the driver's education curriculum.
The USDOT Federal Highway Administration has prepared an informational brochure entitled Roundabouts, A Safer Choice. The brochure provides similar educational information in print format. Click here to view this brochure.
Hilliard Roundabout Projects
As of August 2009, the City of Hilliard has five roundabouts installed. A map showing these roundabout locations can be viewed here.
Beginning in the early spring of 2010, construction will begin on the $7.2 million Triangle Improvement Project, which includes the construction of two roundabouts at the intersections of Main Street/Cemetery Road and Main Street/Scioto Darby Road. The complexity and the location of this project results in many questions by the public. A list of FAQs on the Hilliard Triangle Project can be viewed here.
Pedestrians and Bicyclists at Roundabouts
Pedestrians and bicyclists are our most vulnerable users of the roadway, and all intersections present challenges for non-motorized users. Roundabouts simplify pedestrian/bicycle crossings at intersections because vehicular turning traffic is eliminated and vehicle speeds are slower. State law requires that motorists YIELD to pedestrians at the crosswalks. Please spread the word and do your part to ensure the safety of pedestrians by yielding at the crosswalks. More information about pedestrians and bicycles at roundabouts can be viewed here.
